The park boasts of having more than 300 species of birds and various species of reptiles like Indian Pythons, Indian cobras and others along with the many species of turtles and amphibians in its lakes and other water bodies.
The swamp deer is worthy of a special mention in the fauna of Kanha National Park after the Tigers as this subspecies of the Swamp deer, also known as the hard ground Barasingha, is the pride of the forest of Kanha Park. It is among the endangered species of the Swamp deer and the only subspecies of swamp deer in India which is adapted to the hard ground as the other species of swamp deer mostly stay in the swampy lands. The park has received immense accolades and fame for the effective conservation of this species which was on the verge of extinction in India. So, the swamp deer is an attraction in this forest which can now easily be seen with the increase in their population.
When it comes to the flora of the Kanha Tiger Reserve the abundance of the flora species and their mesmerizing beauty in the dense forest will amaze you. The park is known to be the land of more than 1000 species of flowering plants. The dense forest of large Sal trees, bamboo trees and various other forest trees along with the grasslands constitute the low land forest of Kanha. The dry and deciduous trees with bamboo trees on the slopes constitute the high land forest of Kanha National Park. The open grasslands have numerous species of grass among which few species of grass are important for the existence of the Barasingha and the Gaur. The various species of aquatic plants in the many lakes in the forest are the prime support for the various species of migratory and domestic birds.
The captivating beauty of the landscape of Kanha forest which includes the valley that shaped like a horseshoe, the barren land, grassland, dense Sal and bamboo forest and the Halon valley attract the Nature lovers to offer the picturesque scenery along with the soothing tranquillity and the serene sounds of different animals and melodious chirping of birds. The best location of the park is the sunset point known as BamniDadar which one must visit the park to get the panoramic view of the forest and the overwhelming beauty of the Sunset.
The Kanha National Park allowed tourism activity in a certain duration when the park remains open and the rest of the time the park is closed for any safari. The park allows tourists to enter the park for safari from 16th October to 30th June every year and remains closed for the rest of the time. The best time to visit the park is from mid-October, when the park opens, to mid-March as the weather is pleasant and the forest is lush green. From mid-March to June, the weather gets hot as temperature soaring high, so if you are comfortable in high temperature then you can visit during these months. However, the chances of wildlife sighting are high in the summer season that’s why wildlife photographers and wildlife enthusiast mostly visit from March to June. You can plan your tour accordingly.
