North Bengal has a wide range of tourism aspects, especially for those who have a special inclination towards natural wonders. Along with natural splendour, the northern part of Bengal also blends multiple cultures across the various districts. The various landscapes of North Bengal include plains, river beds, hills, wildlife sanctuaries and so on. Tourists from other parts of Bengal and neighbouring states flock to various offbeat locations in North Bengal. Siliguri and Jalpaiguri act as the gateway to reach various locations, either from Bagdogra Airport, Siliguri or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station, Jalpaiguri. These two places act as strong centres for commuting with a strong network of flights and trains.
Siliguri is the second most significant city in West Bengal, after the capital city of Kolkata, as it is considered an important entry point to North Bengal tourism as well as several parts of North-East India. If you are a resident of Siliguri or coming to Siliguri by flight or train, you are at a hand’s distance from multiple scenic locations from the city. Let’s explore some of the best tourist places that can be easily reached from Siliguri.
Jaldapara National Park (132 km) - Located on the banks of the Torsa River, Jaldapara National Park is a picturesque wildlife destination in the Alipurduar district. Although the tiger population is not very high in Jaldapara, embarking on the safaris is no less than a visionary treat. One of the crucial projects of Jaldapara is the protection of the Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros. Coming to the main tourist attraction in the national park, Elephant and jeep safaris in Jaldapara are a must-try. The trip is considered incomplete without booing for atleast one jeep and one elephant safari. Elephant safaris are only operated in the early morning. You can go for a jeep safari in the evening. Thus, you have to spend an entire day in Jaldapara National Park to explore the wildlife as well as soak in the natural wonders. Torsa River flows on one side of the national park and the Kalyani River flows on the other side. As a result, the weather remains pleasant almost throughout the year, except for the monsoon months.
Kurseong (33 km) - Kurseong is nestled in the Darjeeling district. Not as crowded as the popular Darjeeling Hill Station, Kurseong, serves as a perfect gateway for tourists looking for not so active tour plan. Chalsa (63 km) - Chalsa is a quaint offbeat location near Siliguri.
